It is instinct. Puppies and young male dogs squat like a female. Sometime before or around maturity, the male dog will begin to hike his leg. This is not a learned behavior but pure instinct.
A lot of it is instinct and some of it is temperament. I have had more docile male dogs that squat 50% of the time, and I have had domineering females that lift their leg.
Also, in my experience, male puppies almost always start off squatting, and then start to lift their leg as they hit puberty.
Intresting question – but Its just a thing with males I’ve seen 4 year olds squat to urinate all heir life & thne suddenlly discover they can lifttheir leg- either by seeing another do it or just figuring it out themself – I’ve also witnessed felmaleslifting their legs !
